OCR: Knot Engraving ca. 1483, engraving London, British Museum Known as fantasia dei vinci (vinci having numerous associations, including the willowy twigs used in basket weaving and the verb Vic vincolare, "to bind"), this type of continuous-cord motif captivated Leonardo. Aside from its intrigue as a complex puzzle, Leonardo certainly enjoyed its potential for pun play, including its reference to his own name. Despite this engraving's central insignia, no known academy was led by the artist, and the image is generally attributed to the "school of Leonardo." It may have been designed for the occasion of a scientific "tournament" in which Leonardo played a prominent role, academia then connoting a competition of debate among poets or scientists.
